Queensland's capital, Brisbane has risen to become the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane was named following the christening of the Brisbane River, after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the then governor of New South Wales. Originally the stomping ground of a penal colony, new settlers from Europe were permitted to reside in the area starting from 1835, and Brisbane nowadays is renown for its Queensland architecture, tourism, and major cultural events.
