Paris Underground is a subversion of the classic French cabaret and variety show. The show brings together a diverse range of performers; magicians, dancers, singers, circus and burlesque artists. Including the striking and rare magic of Julia Madotti; one of Australia’s few female magicians and illusionists, the vocal talents of professional stage and screen actor Nick Simpson-Deeks; the beauty and grace of circus artiste and aerial angel Hannah Trott; the dynamic punch and rare skill of tap king Eden Read; the in demand charming chanteuse, MC and actor Aurora Kurth; the dynamic dancing and sultry smoulder of burlesque artist and showgirl Zelia Rose; the comedic, the kinky, the bizarre twisted sisters of neo-burlesque Betty Blood and Pippy Scream and the host of this cavalcade of talent, as MC maestro Monsieur Marveaux; actor, illusionist and magician extraordinaire, the devilishly handsome Richard Vegas!

Considerations

The production is flexible, however, it is best staged within a proscenium setting with a curtain facility. [Ideally there should be some space in front of the curtain for performances to take place whilst staging is being re-set/cleared behind the curtain.] A tested and compliant aerial rigging point is highly desirable as 2 or more critical performances are staged with this aerial element. If this is not available, then the production can still be staged with substitute performances, but this is not a first preference. A hard, wooden stage floor is necessary for the tap dancing routines and these routines will also require amplification. Some rigging of basic staging and curtain hanging will be necessary. Contains partial nudity recommended for ages 16 plus.

Unique Selling Point

The Paris Underground Cabaret has been created and directed to depart from the traditional structure of a vaudeville variety show. It enables a greater theatrical flow and resonance of theme and story telling. The production brings together a diverse range of multi-skilled performers; magicians, dancers, actors, singers, circus and burlesque artists and through the themes of the Paris Underground (a dual reference to a secret network of performances and to the Paris Metro [ underground ] train network, ) the production creates a “journey” with a breadth of performance that is uniquely balanced, curated and executed for comic and dramatic effect.

Marketing Materials

There is a broad market segment for this production as it has appeal for wide ranging demographic and age ranges as witnessed over the numerous performances. However, an over 30's audience (up to 70's) has been the most receptive market segment for this show. There is an equal appeal for both male & female audience members. Couples and groups, as well as groups of women have particularly enjoyed this production. There is partial nudity and adult themes.

Community Engagement

Engagement with the community with workshops is certainly a possibility with all of the artists having previous teaching experience. It may not be possible to have workshops in many towns due to the entire tour party leaving early the following day to travel to the next venue or the extensive bump in and tech required. Workshops will need to be negotiated on a case by case basis. Workshops would focus on Magic, Drama and Acting, MC, Burlesque (over 18), Tap Dancing and music theatre. They would run in group participation format, roughy 2 hours per workshop in a studio or theatre space. Such workshops serve to foster a further interest in the arts and inspire a collective identity within the community.
