Oakey and the River Oakey were first surveyed in 1868, and found to be suited to cattle grazing. A lucrative service was started in an attempt to export kangaroo meat to the world, but ultimately was unsuccessful – as such, Oakey moved its focus to the wildly successful wool and cattle industry production that has continued to this day.

Oakey is located 150 km (2 hr drive) west of Brisbane and just 30 km (30 min drive) west of Toowoomba.
