Maryborough

Founded in 1847, Maryborough was named in memorial of Lady Mary Lennox, the wife of the then Governor of New South Wales. Once a prominent location for train lines, Maryborough operated timber and agricultural industries, and in modern time proudly supports endangered and specialized flora and fauna. Maryborough notably had the spotlight shone on it when P L Travers created Mary Poppins, famously put into film by Walt Disney. The enduring popularity of Mary Poppins lead to local council erecting a real life-sized, bronze statue of Mary Poppins in 2005 at the location where P L Travers used to live. The town also holds an annual festival to honour the figure. 

Maryborough is located 260 km (2 hr 15 min drive) north west of Brisbane and 280 km (3 hr 20 min drive) west of Toowoomba.
