The first recorded sight of Hervey Bay was in 1770 by Captain Cook, who named the location after the third Home of the fabled humpback whales, Hervey Bay is the whale Earl of Bristol, Augustus John Harvey. Its tropical climate lends it to be a popular tourism destination, and it is known to be the whale-watching capital of Australia, with whales migrating down between April and October, with a town Whale and Seafood Festival falling in August each year. 

Hervey Bay is 290 km (3.5 hr drive) north of Brisbane and 30 km (30 min drive) north of Maryborough.
