Located on the cusp of the Coral Sea, Gladstone was a small-scale port that transformed into a major tourist hub. Due to its tropical location, Gladstone is a thriving destination owing to its huge mining industry, seafood trade, and stops for cruise ships. First graced by Captain Cook in 1770, a colony was established under the name Port Curtis, which has now evolved into modern Gladstone, and is one of two major cities in the Central Queensland area. The original site, named Seventeen Seventy (or written 1770) was built to honour Captain Cook’s second landing. Gladstone has many major cultural events including SUNFest in January, Gladstone Country Music Festival in February, and EcoFest in June.
Gladstone is 520 km (6hr drive) north of Brisbane and 100 km (1.5 hr drive) south of Rockhampton.
