Cairns is a major hub in Queensland and the fifth largest city in the state. Mapped by Captain Cook first in 1770, Cairns is popular for its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and other natural wonders. It is a colourful and tropical city known for its industries in agriculture, commercial and tourism, in addition to superb weather all year round. Cairns was also a hub for Allied forces during World War II, and hosts a score of festivals including the Cairns Tropical Writers Festival, Ukulele Festival, and Indigenous Arts Festival. 

Cairns is on the far north coast of Queensland 1700 km (19 hr drive) north of Brisbane.
