Ludwig Leichhardt first explored Springsure circa 1843. The Virgin Rock found near the town’s cliff face is the most prominent feature – named because it once looked like the Virgin Mary cradling the baby Jesus. Nowadays, Springsure is an agricultural hotspot, sporting sunflower, sorghum, wheat and chickpea plantations in addition to cattle farms. Springsure is a key place for the Central Highlands Arts Festival in August.

Springsure is located 760 km (8 hr 45min drive) north west of Brisbane and 400 km (4 hr 20 min drive) west of Gladstone.
