Founded in 1846, Cunnamulla was founded due to its excellent location of two intersecting stock routes across a major waterhole. Major industries in the area include farming of wool, and the hospitality industry, and also hosts annual festivals including the Yowah Opal Festival, and the Cunnamulla Fella Festival, a festival created around local figure the Cunnamulla Fella.

Cunnamulla is just 120 km north of the NSW boarder and 800 km (9.5 hr drive) west of Brisbane.
