Mario Lanza blazed like a meteor whose light lasts a brief moment in time. With his good looks and naturally beautiful tenor voice, he quickly became one of the great romantic performers of Hollywood teamed with Ann Blyth, Kathryn Grayson, Doretta Morrow and Dorothy Kirsten. They brought opera to Hollywood plus hits such as The Loveliest Night of the Year, Because You're Mine and Deep in My Heart Dear. Raffaele Pierno (tenor) and Leslie Martin-Nightingale (soprano) showcase selected moments from Lanza's recordings and movies, including That Midnight Kiss, The Toast of New Orleans and The Great Caruso.

Leslie Martin-Nightingale, who runs Success on Stage, is a professional opera singer who has had a career working with Opera Australia and Opera Queensland, as well as performing in European opera houses and music festivals. 15 years ago she started creating shows and began an association with one of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest outdoor opera events - Opera on the Beach - both as creator and performer, singing alongside other stars of Opera Australia. The experience and skills gained from this series have been put to great use in producing many other events and, thereby, providing performance opportunities for young performers.

Credited with inspiring successive generations of other opera singers, including Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci and José Carreras, it takes a seriously good singer to take on the role of singing the songs that Mario Lanza made famous and we have a brilliant tenor in Raffaele Pierno. Leslie Martin-Nightingale, who will be singing the music of Ann Blyth and Kathryn Grayson, has performed with Opera Australia and Opera Queensland and loves to bring back the glorious music of the 40s and 50s, which is loved by so many yet rarely performed live.

Our show will also lead to more social inclusion for the older demographic by encouraging them to come to the theatre to relive their golden years.
