A natural beauty replete with rivers, creeks, and mangroves, Ayr is a popular destination for fishing, crabbing and windsurfing. With Alva Beach not far away, Ayr is a typical tropical town. The Burdekin Shire produces the most sugar cane per square metre in Australia, and its famous Burdekin Bridge is one of the longest in Queensland (it’s longer than the Story Bridge in Brisbane and only 46 metes shorter than the Harbour Bridge in Sydney!). Ayr plays host to the Burdekin Water Festival that takes place every year in September.
Ayr is located on the Queensland coast, 1300 km (14 hr drive) north of Brisbane and 90 km (1 hr drive) south of Townsville.
