St George was established in 1862, sitting on the Balonne River in a prime position for fishing. Currently, the town is chiefly a centre for cotton farming, and has strong livestock and wheat production industries. It also sits upon no less than four principal highways, including the Castlereagh, Moonie, Carnarvon and Balonne Highways, rendering it an important location for travel and commuters. The St George show is held annually on the first Sunday in May.

St George is located 500 km (6hr drive) west of Brisbane and 100 km (1 hr drive) north of the NSW boarder.
