Originally known as Plane Creek, Sarina was named after the mythological Greek enchantress by William Charles Borlase Wilson in 1882. It is a major supplier of ethanol, in addition to having local industries including agriculture and grazing, with sugar cane being a chief export. A large cane-toad statue, named Buffy, is situated in the town centre, built in the 1980’s in honour of Sarina's cane farming history. The Sarina Festival is held in September each year.
Sarina is located on the Queensland Coast, just 35 km (30 min drive) south of Mackay and 900 km (10 hr drive) north of Brisbane.
