Normanton is a small shire off the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria, sitting on the Norman River. Established in 1867, the town had the advantage of benefiting from the gold boom, although nowadays it is home to a small cattle industry. Normanton is home to The Big Barramundi (a fish reaching 6 meters in length), and the Statue of Krys, a statue of and dedicated to a local 8.64 m long saltwater crocodile. The Normanton Rodeo is an important annual event in June.
Normanton is located 2085 km (23 hr 20 min drive) north west of Brisbane and 500 km (6 hr 20 min drive) north of Mount Isa.
