Like many towns in Queensland, Monto boomed into prominence at the height of the Gold Rush. Established in 1840s, it wasn’t until gold was unearthed in the 1870s that the town expanded rapidly, and it wasn’t until 1924 that the location was declared a township. Shifting away from its dwindling gold reserves, the town’s industries moved towards logging and farming, which are still strong industries to this day. In recent times, Monto has begun a foray into mining for coal, and hosts the resplendent Opera in the Cania Gorge each year.
Monto is 480 km (5 hr 30 min drive) north of Brisbane and 200 km (3 hr drive) west of Bundaberg.
