Named after the great surveyer and explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell, the site of Mitchell is believed to have been occupied for over 19,000 years before European settlement. Proclaimed a town in 1864, Mitchell has a strong industry in local cattle and sheep, with a strong history of farming. The spot is also known for the Artesian Spas, which come from the famed Great Artesian Basin, which is the largest and greatest Artesian Basin in the world.

Mitchell is 560 km (6 hr 30 min drive) west of Brisbane.
