Once famed for its history of the Gold Rush and gold mining, gazing is the chief export and income of Georgetown. The Shire of Etheridge as inundated with gold pockets, so the town of Etheridge was established in 1870 – it later was renamed to ‘Georgetown’ in 1871 to honour the well-respected commissioner, Howard St. George. The town has many historical and heritage landmarks owing to its important economic history, and holds the Georgetown Rodeo in July.
George Town is 1860 km (20.5 hr drive) north west of Brisabne and 380 km (5 hr drive) south west of Cairns.
