Known for its character and colourful history, Childers was first occupied in 1850 before formally established in 1885, and was named after British statesman Hugh Childers. Surrounded by fields of rich volcanic soil, Childers is a growing tourist destination and thriving agricultural hub, being the chief export of cane sugar in Queensland. It was the location of the famous Sugar Strike of 1911, the ramifications of which paved the way for better work conditions on plantations (and was immortalized into a local play ‘Red Soil, White Sugar’ by Erroll O’Neill in 2011!). Childers hosts a large-scale Multicultral Festival in July each year.

Childers is 315 km (4 hr drive) north of Brisabne and 50 km (45 min drive) south of Bundaberg.
