When the Scotts family relinquished their hold on the land around Taromeo station in 1887, it gave birth to two glorious Queensland towns Benarkin, and Blackbutt. Its most lucrative export was the discovery of gold, which lead to gold rush fever and a great expansion of the town in the 19th century. However, the backbone of the town was the timber industry, and the town is named after one of its chief exports (‘eucalyptus pilularis’ – blackbutt tree!). The town also hosts the charming Bloomin Beautiful Blackbutt Avocado Festival in September.
Blackbutt is 170 km (2 hr drive) north west of Brisbane and 140 km (2 hr drive) west of the Sunshine Coast.
