Winton is a small town that sits two hours north of Longreach in Central Queensland. It is a historically significant destination as it was known as the original home of Australia’s most popular airline, Qantas, in 1920, which based its operations out of there during its inception. Nowadays, it is locally known for its cattle and sheep raising, and also is a hot spot for fossil discoveries. It also sits on the Great Artesian Basin, the largest and greatest Artesian Basin in the world. The biannual Winton Outback Festival is held in September.
Winton is 1350 km (14 hr 40 min drive) north west of Brisbane.
