Derived from the Aboriginal word for “hidden place”, Tambo was established in 1863 in the Central Queensland region on the banks of the Barcoo River. Tambo was originally known as Carrangarra, and a number of heritage-listed buildings are still intact from the original establishment. In modern times, tourism plays a large role in the town’s economy, as does livestock trading. Located close to Blackall, Tambo participates in the Shockwave Festival, held annually across the region.
Tambo is located 860 km (9 hr 30 min drive) north west of Brisbane and 315 km (3 hr 15 min drive) south east of Longreach.
