Surrounded by grazing planes, Dysart is a hot spot for mining in Queensland. With the location of coal spots being identified as early as 1842, Ludwig Leichhardt noted the towns potential for prosperity before its founding in the 1860s. Dysart also plays host to the Gold and Coal Festival, an annual event in August.

Dysart is 940 km (10 hr drive) north of Brisbane and 250 km (2.5 km drive) south west of Mackay.
