Charters Towers

In it’s heyday Charters Towers was one of the most vibrant and resourceful locations in Queensland. The town was founded in the 1871, when gold was discovered by chance by 12-year old Jupiter Mosman on the Towers Hill. During the early 19^th century gold rush took over the identity of the town, before it returned to its quiet roots again in modern times. Now Charters Towers has over a dozen heritage-listed sites, and in addition to its thriving mining is home to a strong beef industry, and is a major hub in the area for education. It also hosts the 10 Days in the Towers festival, which runs across April and May each year to highlight the town.

Charters Towers is 1400 km (14.5 hr drive) north of Brisbane and 140 km (1.5 hr drive) south west of Townsville.
