As per the recommendation of Leichardt, the town of Capella was established in the late 1860s owing to its rich natural surroundings. These days, the town is an essential service location catering to coal-mine activities. Capella is a key player in the Festival of Gems, locally known as ‘Gemfest’, which occurs annually in August.
Capella is 930 km (10.5 hr drive) north west of Brisbane and 330 km (3.5 hr drive) west of Rockhampton.
