Named after the nearby creek which legend told flowed with black water, Blackwater is a thriving community in the coal mining area of Queensland. Seven major mines provide opportunities to many workers, even though when initially discovered by Leichardt, they went untapped for over a century. The landscape surrounding the town is rich in not only coal but also the phenomenal Blackdown Tablelands, which attracts many visitors and has a strong Aboriginal history, and hosts the Festival of Gems in August.
Blackwater is 800 km (9 hr drive) north west of Brisbane and 200 km (2 hr drive) west of Rockhampton.
