Situated on Lagoon Creek, Barcaldine is the small town that made a big impact on cattle rearing, and is named after the sheep station called Barcaldine Downs. Many iconic landmarks in the town, including the Shire Hall and War Clock Memorial, are heritage listed. Each street in Barcaldine is named after different types of trees, and until 2006 the town was the home to the famed Tree of Knowledge, which has a festival named after it taking place annually.

Barcaldine is located in central Queensland, 1000 km (12 hr drive) north west of Brisbane and 580 km (6 hr drive) west of Rockhampton.
